This novella of sex and murder is set in Venice, hotbed of conspiracy and intrigue. A financial derivatives trader, with a dark psyche and disturbing sexual proclivities, is being hunted by the former Czech spy whom he wronged many years ago, a handsome German financial investigator, and a stolid Italian policeman. A lovely young Romanian painter and two overheated heiresses complete the picture.
The story explores the psychological dimensions of the BDSM subculture, the world of espionage, and the corrupt environment of speculative finance. Although this is primarily a novella of suspense and intrigue, the erotic aspects of the story play a very prominent role in illuminating the inner lives of the cast of characters.
Dead In The Water ~ A Venetian Romance edition by Andre LeMagne Literature Fiction eBooks
This brisk-moving novella covers sex, death, and underhanded financial dealings, all in four compact chapters. We follow Helmut, an undercover German cop, as an investigation plunges him into the underworld of Venice, introducing him to a diverse cast of characters, each of whom takes their turn to feature in the story. The descriptions of Venice are lush and detailed and brought me back to my own visits to that city: travel-lovers will find a lot to like here with the story's focus on Venice and on the pan-European cast. The inclusion of an artist as one of the central characters, and discussions of art and illustrations of Venice and the piece she is working on, add a welcome dimension to the story, making it more than just a sex-and-death thriller. The brisk pace of the novella will keep you turning the pages, and the final denouement is both satisfying and unexpected.
Like everything else in the story, the interactions between the characters are sketched out in a few brief lines, which can make the quick development of their relationships seem a little too precipitous at times, but the central story--of the attempts to catch a criminal against the backdrop of Venice--is well-handled and an exciting read. Fans of the thriller/crime novel genre will find this to be a fast, satisfying read.
